拖挂式C型房车在美国称为双端可拓展旅游拖挂房车，更偏向于露营车，这类房车在美国被称为帐篷房车，这种房车大多用于露营体验。在路上，拖挂式C型房车就像一个大的、扁平的行李箱，而将车体完全撑开后才是房车的样子。因为其可折叠的特点，车内设施较为简单，主要是为人们提供舒适的睡眠区域，还会配有简单的炉具、洗浴、桌椅等小型折叠可移动装备，有些拖挂式C型房车首尾可向两侧扩展，增加车内使用空间。
拖挂式C型房车的特点是重量轻、牵引方便、型号众多。由于此类房车重量较轻，大多数汽车甚至小型迷你汽车都可以对其拖拽，有时单仅人力就可操纵这些房车；缺点是该种房车车内设施简单，同时仅适于温暖季节旅游使用。

拖挂式D型房车也被称为驮挂房车，是一种驮在皮卡车厢或是经过改装的车槽上的车型，这款房车与其他房车相比显著的特点是没有单独车轮全部依靠"牵引车"前进。拖挂式D型房车外表更像是可以拆卸的自行式C型房车。这样的设计更符合前往路况不好的露地、景点等旅行、度假。
