拖挂式A型房车在美国被称为传统拖挂房车，是拖挂式房车的典型，这类房车不具备自身驱动力，要依靠牵引车才能前进。
拖挂式B型房车
拖挂式B型房车在美国被称为五轮拖挂式房车，外形庞大，具有自己的车轮，侧面车形类似于长方形少了右下角，而右上角通过放在牵引车（多为皮卡车）车厢里的拖挂连接装置搭在牵引车车厢上。这一外型特点使这类房车具有了其他拖挂式房车所缺少的错层生活空间。这一独特设计使皮卡车车厢上方空间成为宽大的主卧室，而车内更多的是家庭活动空间。此外，许多拖挂式B型房车车后方装有全景观玻璃窗。总体而言，拖挂式B型房车宽敞的卧室空间、活动领域使得该类房车成为拖挂式房车中的自行式A型房车。
作为拖挂式房车之一，它同样可以在停驻营地后以及其他不必行走的情况下与牵引车辆分离，牵引车可以单独活动。
